In the dark and distant days before social networks (i.e., my childhood), Atari's Asteroids famously made local convenience store legends out of gaping teenagers who stood glued to the console's screen for hours on end. As such, it's only appropriate that such a gaming hallmark should make a triumphant entry into the nascent world of social gaming. Here is a game that frustrates while it pleases, challenges while it enchants, and revels in its retro roots while blasting a course for Facebook's acceptance as a hardcore gaming platform. To be sure, Asteroids Online isn't for everyone, but this incarnation proves that Atari's masterpiece has lost none of its force in the 31 years since its release.

Monster Galaxy is something unusual and ambitious for Facebook, an attempt to create a clone of Nintendo’s extraordinarily deep Pokemon RPGs that’s friendly to social gameplay. While there are very few true social mechanics in Monster Galaxy, the game is largely successful at bringing the appeal of monster training and collecting games into something you can play for free on Facebook. The game features 120 distinct monsters to battle and capture, without any of the “spend money if you want this rare monster!” shenanigans you might expect.

If Rovio is indeed planning to release their iPhone smash hit Angry Birds onto the PC/Mac like the rumor mill has been whispering, they'd better hurry up because the desktop clones are already coming out of the woodwork. Case in point: Pengu Wars, aka Angry Penguins.

As the year 2010 ends, 3-D city-building games continue to grow into a big trend on Facebook. Exhibit A, of course, is CityVille (and it’s 20 million inhabitants).

The big news in Facebook games this weekend is just how fast Zynga’s CityVille is growing. As of this morning, CityVille has grown to 22 million monthly active users (MAUs) and over 7 million daily active users) making it the second largest city in the world.

The day we were informed that the Vikings didn't really wear helmets with huge horns sticking out of either side was the day our fascination with the Norse warriors diminished a little - suddenly these avid and ruthless explorers didn't seem so intriguing anymore. Fortunately, Swords and Soldiers HD has restored our faith in these Norsemen, and given us a good laugh to boot.

While gamers are still eagerly opening up the doors on their Angry Birds Seasons Advent calendars, developer Rovio has just confirmed what’s next for the holiday-themed title, and this time around it’s going to be all about love.

Illusia is the kind of game you desperately want to love. It looks simply adorable, with a charming retro art style, and there's some solid RPG mechanics that offer plenty of depth. But the game fights with you virtually every step of the way, marring what would otherwise be an excellent experience, thanks to some terrible menus, controls, writing, and level design.
